50th Retrospective

NEW BOOK | Josh Simpson: 50 Years of Visionary Glass

Preface by Sue Reed

For the past fifty years, artist Josh Simpson has merged a lifetime of knowledge about glass technique and chemistry with his own unique vision and creative impulse. The result is a vast body of works that range from imaginative worlds we can hold in the palm of our hand to dramatic sculptural pieces displayed in galleries and museums around the world.

This book shines a light on the evolution of Simpson’s creative process. Through individual chapters that examine his signature Series, the book shows how the artist’s vision matured as he explored new ideas, methods, and materials within each form and type of work.

Personal narrations by Simpson himself reveal discoveries, lessons learned, turning points, and amusing or transformative experiences. Additional narrative segments tell the story of his life beyond the studio and within the craft world. Essays and comments by glass scholars frame his work within the larger context of the glass world, while tributes from assistants, associates, and friends bring Simpson to life and add dimension to the man behind the art.

Josh Simpson: 50 Years of Visionary Glass was published by Schiffer Publishing, July 2022.

In a sense, “Visionary Landscapes” represents not only landscapes of the objective world but also aspects of Simpson’s heart. These worlds of silence, of fantastic frozen fireworks and untouchable enigmas, also reveal his technical and artistic growth over time.
