Vintage Copper Basket

$6,500.00

For Josh, Copper Baskets represent the expansion of the universe being pulled outward by the force of dark energy, countered by the constraint of mass and gravity.

Sylva Petrova, Former Curator of Decorative Arts Museum in Prague, Czech Republic, says: “The Copper Basket Series marks one of the high points in Simpson’s oeuvre. Not as conventionally beautiful as some of Simpson’s works, they are organic in appearance, suggesting ancient vessels whose original purpose can now scarcely be determined.”

13.25” x 9.75” x 8.5”

Made in 2008. Inscribed “Simpson” and 7.2008 on the side.

The wire “basket” component of each Copper Basket was hand-made by Josh using a specialized TIG welding technique that he taught himself. He collected strands of pure copper wire from various sources (including a defunct power plant), and shaped them into unique empty frames designed to hold the blown glass while also letting it bulge and expand through the openings. Some of the resulting works were then patina’d to age the copper wire and/or treated to create frosted glass.
